17″ Unibody Macbook Pro Hard Drive Installation
The second thing I did after turning on my new 17″ unibody Macbook pro was flip is over and start taking it apart. Basically, I got it in the mail, unpacked it and turned it on to make sure everything worked. I then flipped it over and proceed to open it up to check out the insides. While I was waiting for my new macbook pro to come in the mail I had ordered a new Seagate 7200 500GB(ST3500630AS) hard drive so I was eager to put it in. That, plus I didn’t want to start installing everything on my new computer just to swap the hard drive later and either have to migrate or re-install so I figured now was the best time.
The video below shows the installation process, it was pretty easy and straight forward from start to finish. The hardest part is probably taking off the back cover which contains eight tiny screws. Enjoy the video and feel free to ask any questions.
Edit: The drive is kick-ass by the way!

Thanks for the great vid! I’m planning to upgrade mine too, but can you link me to the exact drive you’re using? When I search based on the model number in your article, I only seem to find ‘desktop’ drives.
@J. Gohil: Newegg and Tigerdirect should have the drives. The model number is ST9500420AS.

Hi just wondering do you know is a drive installed with OSX 10.5.6 on a unibody macbook pro 2.53Ghz going to be compatible with a unibody 17? ie. can i just pop the HD out of the 15″ and install into the 17″ with no issues - with firmware etc etc??
I’m just using my new MBP 17 and booted up from my old HD from my 15″ via Firewire.
thanks
Derrick
Thanks for the video, very helpful.
With the announcements for the new MBPs today, I am thinking that the new 15inch and 13in are going to be the same as this!
I would think so. I think when they mentioned the new 15″ they said it has the same built in battery so they probably made it the same way which means it’s just as easy to change out.
Awesome, thanks bro!
